Transitioning from Nursery to Little Girl's Room

My youngest daughter is growing up so fast! I’ve been meaning to write this post for a long time but life happened and then I forgot about it - until now.

When our daughter Annalise turned three it was time to take down her crib and put up a twin bed. It was time to transition from nursery to a big girl’s room.

We fun have playing tea party in this cute corner of her room. The chair and tables were given to us 14 years ago with our older daughter’s Kay-Lynn. The table and chairs were originally white, but I spray painted two of the chairs pink for a pop of color.

I knew I wanted a princess themed room and with a canopy to hang from a crown. I found several beautiful ones at Pottery Barn Kids - but they were way over my budget. So I decided to create my own - with my husband’s help. I found this resin crown at Hobby Lobby. It was originally hot pink so I spray painted it gold to match the blush and gold princess theme. We then screwed the crown into the custom made wood box. My husband built the wooden box from scrap wood in our garage. Then we attached it to the wall. I then added the white chiffon fabric that I bought from my local Joanne’s fabric store and fastened it to the back of the wooden box with rope. I also sewed the bows and made the crib skirt. For the pink edge on the chiffon canopy, I used bias tape The crib bumper and quilt are from Pottery Barn Kids.

My husband and I dressed up this @ikeausa dresser by adding new feet, moldings on the top and bottom, and new mirrored knobs. I also added a glass top for elegance. And do you see that pretty pink dress hanging on the hanger? That was mine from when I was a little girl! I love sentimental pieces - do you?

As much I loved this cozy corner where I would cuddle up my baby girl, I knew the tufted arm chair had to be removed to make room for a table and chairs that would inspire childhood play.

Here is is! Her beautiful grown up princess bed! I knew the exact bedding I wanted and needed for her. I chose Beddy’s in Vintage Blush because it works wonderfully with the existing room decor, paint and throw pillows. (Use can use code NISSALYNN for 15% off your entire purchase at Beddy’s.) I also ordered the gray poka dot minkey blanket from Beddy’s.. I picked up the gold dot and blush throw pillows from Hobby Lobby. The small white monogramed ruffle pillow sham is from Pottery Barn Kids.

My husband added the white trim work on the walls.

Even though Annalise has a big girl room, I still kept these new born photos of her on her dresser.

Getting Guest Room Ready!

With summer almost here, you might have friends and family coming to visit. Today I’m sharing some ideas to help you create a beautiful guest room without having to do an entire bedroom remodel!

After my daughter left for college in Idaho, I wanted to transition her high school looking bedroom into a classic and timeless guest bedroom. My Texas girl loved her country gray and yellow themed room, but it wasn't quite the sophisticated look I wanted. I didn’t want to repaint her light gray walls or replace the white drapes, so I decided to keep the gray color pallet and swap out the yellow accessories for white ones - like new white pillows.

The first thing we did was sell her old shabby chic distressed bedroom set. Then I shopped for a new bed since that is the focal point of the bedroom. I knew I wanted a tufted headboard and I immediately fell in love with this one from Brookside

I also knew I wanted light colored night stands to help brighten up the room. I found a set and they are great quality and even have an outlet built in the back with a USB port for easy phone charging. I keep brand new bright white towels in the nightstand drawers ready for guests when they come visit.

I love neutral decor and bedding, so even though the bed is gray, I decided to go with gray comforter and shams. To brighten the space up and add texture, I chose white faux fur euro shams, gray plaid pillow covers, and an ivory knit blanket from Beddy’s. These pieces are part of the Boujee Bundle. I originally ordered this bundle for my son’s room to go with his gray Beddy’s Boujee Luxe line bedding, but loved these pieces in this room too! White accent pieces are so versatile! (Use code NISSA LYNN for 15% off your entire purchase at Beddy’s.)

The middle pillow in the photos is my favorite because of the design and texture. Can you believe it’s from Walmart? It’s super affordable!

The next thing I wanted to do to refresh this room was to get a new mattress. My daughter had been sleeping on an old queen mattress for some time, and a new one was definitely needed. When my husband and I upgraded to a king sized bed eight months ago, we chose the Tranquilium mattress from Bed in a Box. This mattress is made up of a 12" multilayer firm, foam construction, which feels so much better than a spring mattress. It also has a memory foam top layer making it super soft! I love it so much, I definitely wanted to get another one for my guest bedroom! (You can save money by using code NISSALYNN25 for $25 off!) #sponsored

Since it is a guest room, I wanted to keep the decor to a minimum. I bought these two wildflower wreaths and placed them on top of two shiplap boards to hang above the headboard. (Use code NISSA LYNN for 10% off your entire purchase Krumpets!)

I attached a ribbon to the top hooks and attached the board to the wall with a nail. I used command strips to attach the wreath to the shiplap boards.

I found a pair of gray lamps that now I wish were a little taller, but I at the same time, I didn’t want them to tower over the bed and become the focal point of the rooms. I also added a fabric bench at the foot of the bed to make the room feel cozy. Then finished by adding some faux floral arrangements I found at Marshalls.

Hopefully this helps you get some ideas for refreshing a bedroom in your home. Below are the links to products or similar products I used.

Three Key Pieces for a Simple Bedroom Refresh!

I decided my bedroom needed a small refresh, and my goal was to do it with only a couple of new pieces! I needed a new mattress, bed and nightstands. I knew with those three items alone, they could make a huge change to my master bedroom

To start this refresh, I began with the essential part of any bedroom - the bed and mattress! I’ve have the same bed and mattress for almost nine years. My old mattress was causing my back to ache, so I knew I wanted a firmer mattress. BedInABox was the answer! I’ve been sleeping on my new BedInABox mattress for about a month now, and I can honestly say that my body feels more rested!

We have the Tranquillium in king size, and I love the 12", multilayer firm, foam construction. It makes such a difference in my sleep! And to save money - use code NISSALYNN20 for an additional $20 off! #ad

My prior bed was a well loved four poster bed that I bought at Goodwill. We brought it home and my husband replaced a couple of the slats and spray painted it in satin white. Then I distressed it with sand paper to make it look shabby chic. I loved it! (It’s so amazing what you can do with spray paint!) But over the last year, the bed has shown significant wear and tear, and the wood frame started to break - so it was time for a new one.

IMG_6958.jpeg

The traditional four poster bed was so large, that it seemed take over our entire bedroom, plus the poles were the first thing you noticed when you walked into the room. I decided I wanted a French country bed with a large tufted headboard. The Realyn King Panel bed from Living Spaces was the answer!

I need to tell you about Living Spaces, because it is a furniture store unlike any other! In my local Living Spaces store, in Frisco, Texas, they have four, 2000 sq ft homes built inside the store to showcase their beautiful furniture. This also helps give you decorating and furniture placement ideas. Such a great concept!

After changing up the bed and mattress, new nightstands were next. I wanted to mix styles and add more of a modern looking nightstand to go along with the French bed, so I ordered two night stands from the Presby collection at Living Spaces. The Presby nightstands are great because they have lots of storage and an USB outlet. Plus, I love the pull out piece to hold my lap top. I highly recommend them!

I kept the same bedding and accessories but moved the decorative bench from my office and placed it at the foot of my bed. I also moved my ginger jars from living room to the nightstands.

Don’t be afraid to move accessories or accent furniture in your home. It can give a space new life and save you money!

So remember, next time you want to redo a room, you don’t have to change everything, just change a couple pieces and then that room will take on a completely new look!

Simple Ways to Refresh a Child's Bedroom

Hello! How has your summer been? We’ve been keeping busy by going to the pool and doing some small projects around the house. One of these was updating my son Brady’s bedroom. I didn’t want to go with a theme bedroom, but rather a modern farmhouse/coastal look that would last a while. We had a small budget to work with so we didn’t buy any new furniture, instead we decided to repurpose the items we had. To change the look of the room, the first thing we did was paint the dark red cottage style twin beds. I chose a vibrant blue spray paint called Oxford Blue by Krylon in a satin finish finish. It worked so well!

Adjustments.jpeg

First, I want to let you know, this room is tricky to decorates because of that little white door in the middle of the wall. The door leads to the attic, which we into a hideout for the kids. The majority of the time the night stand table is off to the side of the left bed. But for these photos I moved it to the middle.

After painting the beds, we changed up the bedding. To me, new bedding makes a huge difference in any bedroom. This adorable bedding is from my favorite bedding place - Beddy’s. I chose the Farmhouse Collection because the bedding has a blue/gray stripe against a refreshing white background. The collection also has matching pillows, which coordinate well with the bedding. As a mom, I love Beddy’s because of the soft fabrics and styles, but most importantly because of the functionality of the zip up feature. It helps keep kids’ rooms tidy! Beddy’s are an easy way to make the bed, and we no longer have blankets and sheets dragging on the floor. Plus, the Beddy’s come with a pillow case and matching sham - so you don’t need to buy a separate sheet set! I already had the gray rug, but it’s only a 5x7, so I definitely need an 8x10 for this room.

I love anything with stars on it, so I also added these cute star pillows from Krumpets Home Decor. (You can use code NISSALYNN at Krumpetshome.com for 10% off your order.)

To brighten up the room we tried a new thing - peel and stick wall paper. I chose a shiplap wallpaper from Wall Blush and it looks great! But it was pretty tricky to put up, but defintley with it! (You can use code nissalynninteriors15 for 15% off your order.)

I took down the previous decor and replaced it with wooden pennants. The pennants were originally a natural wood color - so we spray painted them white. I also added this darling little wall shelf by the bed for easy access to books for bedtime reading.

The quilts at the foot of the beds, I’ve had for years. I bought them at Target, and they have lasted for a long time. (Here’s a link to a similar quilt that I have.) I love having a quilt or extra duvet at the foot of every bed in my home because it makes the room feel more cozy.

I also changed out the curtains in this room. Before we had navy chevron window treatments, but they didn’t go with the modern farmhouse look I was going for. (Plus, we only have on window in the room, so I wanted somthing light and airy.) The buffalo check curtains were perfect! And they were so inexpensive!

As for the galvanized metal letters above the beds, I purchased them at Hobby Lobby several years ago. I love them so much I decided to keep them in the same place.

I hope this post inspired you in some way! If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a question in the comments and I’d be happy to get back to you.

Growing up and Changing Spaces!

I have two daughters fourteen years apart, and it was time to update both girls’ rooms. My youngest daughter recently turned three, so we changed her room from nursery to little girl’s room by taking down her crib and putting up a twin bed. My seventeen year old wanted to update her room up by creating a more sophisticated space. My goal for both rooms was wanted to keep the current color schemes so we did have to repaint and buy everything new.

Below is a photo of Annalise’s nursery before we made changes. When we put up her big girl bed, I knew exactly the bedding I wanted for her. Enter Beddy’s once again! I chose Beddy’s in Vintage Blush because it works wonderfully with the existing color scheme in her room! (And you can use code NISSALYNN for 15% off your order!)

The white iron bed has a special place in my heart as we bought it for my first daughter 15 years ago and stored it in the attic hoping we would have another little girl again some day. When I found out I was having Annalise after three boys - I was over the moon! I was excited to put this bed frame again!

I used both the Gray Dot and Blush Beddy’s blankets and layered them to make the bed look extra “fluffy.” These blankets are so soft and comfy, I frequently curl up with them when watching TV. (And you can use code NISSALYNN for 15% off your order!)

Our oldest daughter, Kay-Lynn, turned 17 she wanted a little more sleek and stylish look for her bedroom. I wanted a way for her to keep her room more tidy! So I thought Beddy’s would be great idea for my teenage daughter too. Plus Beddy’s would help her make her bed faster before her friends come over!

Here is a photo of my seventeen daughters room before the room improvements. My daughter has her own style and she knew what she wanted to change. She chose the Modern Gray Bedddy’s in all cotton for her bedding. We also changed out the darker gray rug, for a lighter one, and removed the decorative pom poms in the corner. She picked out the hanging plant holders and the faux succulent plants all on her own. She kept the rustic wood signs (from Hobby Lobby), above her bed, but added lights around them to make them more fun. We kept the yellow and gray comforter that resting at the bottom of her bed. You can find a similar on here. We also added a small white desk, lamp, and chair so she has a place to do homework.

It’s amazing how changing out the bedding and a few accessories can make such a huge difference!

Bedding My Older Boys are Obsessed with!

This post is sponsored by Beddy’s, but all opinions are my own.

A few months ago my two younger children, ages seven and two, received Beddy’s for each of twin beds. Well, after seeing how easy it was for the littles to make their beds, and how soft and cozy the fabric was, my two older sons, ages fourteen and eleven, wanted Beddy’s too! (Seriously my fourteen year old was begging me to get a set for him! It was quite humorous.) Then once I placed the order to get the older boys a set for each of their beds, my fourteen year old kept asking me every day when they were coming!

IMG_0320.jpg

Now you’re probably wondering why these older boys wanted this bedding so badly!? Let me explain why we love Beddy’s so much, and why we are a Beddy’s family through and through! It has really has changed our lives!

My husband Justin designed and customer built the board of button style back wall. He did an amazing job!

First off, Beddy’s has zippers all the way down both sides and across the bottom, so it’s easy for kids to make their beds - all they have to do is zip them up! As a mom, I love it because my kids don’t complain about making their beds anymore, and there are no more sheets and blankets all over the floor. The sides are quilted all around so it looks like the bedding is always tucked in, without the hassle of doing it yourself like real sheets or quilts. Beddy’s also has elastic along the bottom edge so it doesn't come off like a lot of sheets sets do.

My Dad just retired from working in the NFL for the past twenty years. He was a scout for several teams, and has two Super Bowl rings and a Scout of the Year ring. The autographed footballs came from him.

My boys love the minky fabric (100% polyester), because it’s extremely soft. The outer quilt fabric is 100% cotton. That’s important to me because my boys get hot - especially during Texas summer nights. Cotton is more breathable than other fabrics - which helps keeps their body temperatures down during the night and I don’t have to spend a fortune keeping the AC way down. Win-Win!

My two smaller children have Game On Gray, a gray rugby stripe, which goes great in their Americana/car themed room. For the older boys I chose Game On, a blue rugby stripe, to go with their NFL football themed room. I like the blue stripes in the Game On because it’s a classic look that goes with anything. The blue really compliments my son’s existing NFL decor, rug and wood furniture.

You can see the inside of the Beddy’s bedding. The internal fabric is so plush.

The Beddy’s are so stylish and are perfect for all ages, as well different styled bedrooms. In my case Beddy’s was perfect for my younger two children and my for teens! I have to tell you, when I was shopping on the Beddy’s website, I was floored with all the wonderful patterns and styles they offer. They also have a fantastic selection of matching pillows and blankets to go with their bedding!
